He broke the record of the highest-ever individual score by a batsman in the game’s showcase event in the process at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday.

The record score by a batsman in the World Cup was previously held by Gary Kirsten, who scored 188 against the United Arab Emirates in Rawalpindi in 1996.

The masterblaster opener slugged 16 sixes -- equalling the ODI record -- as well as 10 fours in the 147-ball innings, which formed the large part of an ODI record 372-run partnership with Marlon Samuels (133).

The 35-year-old was dismissed on 215 with the last ball of the innings while trying for a 17th six only to be caught in the deep.

Gayle became the first non-Indian batsman to have scored a double ton in ODIs, third highest in all. Rohit Sharma leads the list with 264 against Sri Lanka while Virender Sehwag stands second with 219.

Gayle overtook Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 200 against South Africa.
