SUST orders students to leave dorms after clashes between Chhatra League factions

Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet have been ordered to vacate the residential halls.

The hall provosts made the order on Thursday following the vice-chancellor’s decision to ensure students’ safety amid the ongoing unrest that generated from clashes between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League on campus recently.
 
Male students will have to leave their halls by 6pm Thursday while the female students have been given time until 12pm on Friday.
 
Acting Provost of Shah Paran Hall Shahidul Hossain said: “The decision comes from the vice-chancellor to ensure safety of the students in the present context.”
 
SUST will remain closed from Sunday until Sep 15 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
 
When bdnews24.com tried to reach Vice-Chancellor Aminul Hoque Bhuiyan over phone, his personal secretary Kabir Uddin said that the VC was attending a meeting of the academic council.
 
Eight activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL)’s SUST unit were injured in a clash between two factions on Saturday.
 
The clash ensued following an altercation over holding a football tournament on the campus between the groups led by the unit's General Secretary Imran Khan and Uttam Das, a former member of BCL central committee.
 
Different fractions of SUST BCL engaged in clashes repeatedly in the last few days.
 
Clash between factions led by SUST BCL President Sanjiban Chakarabarty Partho and Imran Khan left scores of students injured on Monday and Wednesday.
