The expelled students are – applied mathematics department’s Ratul Hasan Nayeem, zoology department’s Amirul Islam and statistics department’s Nazmul Sakib.

All of them are first-year students and attached to Amar Ekushey Hall. They are tied to the ruling Awami League student wing’s hall unit.

The DU’s acting Proctor Amzad Ali told bdnews24.com of their expulsion on Thursday.

The patrol team of the university's proctorial body caught the three on Tuesday midnight when they were harassing the girl at the TSC premises.

They were turned over to Shahbagh police later that night.

Amzad Ali on Thursday said the authorities also show-caused the girl and her friend, population science’s first-year student Rakib Iqbal who was with her at the time.

They are to explain their presence at the TSC late into the night without permission from authorities.

A two-member committee would look into the matter and there was the possibility of stern actions being taken based on their findings, he added.

On Wednesday, Ali told bdnews24.com that Nayeem, Amirul and Sakib were under the influence of drugs when his team detained them.

The three were sent to court on Thursday, Shahbagh police OC Abu Bakar Siddique said.

“No case has been filed over the incident yet. They were sent to court under Section 54 (of the Code of Criminal Procedure),” he added.

Section 54 allows police to detain or arrest anyone without a warrant over suspicious behaviour and sent them to court.
