At least seven persons including a police sub-inspector were injured during the clash on Tuesday afternoon.

Police had to lob teargas shells as well as fire blank shots to disperse the warring groups of the ruling Awami League's student wing.

The injured were treated at the University Medical Centre, police said.

The followers of BCL's CU unit President Alamgir Tipu and General Secretary Fazle Rabbi Sujon locked horns after an argument over taking control of seats at Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall, Hathazari police Inspector Md Salauddin told bdnews24.com quoting witnesses.

They fought with sticks and metal rods.

Salauddin said they fired over 100 teargas shells and blanks shots to bring  the situation under control.

Tension on the campus ran high until the clash ended in the evening, witnesses told bdnews24.com.

The Chhatra League central committee on July 19 declared the new CU BCL unit committee.

Three days later, Tipu and Sujon at a press briefing announced that they had no more disputes and pledged to work together.

After Tuesday's clash, Sujon, a follower of Chittagong metropolitan Awami League President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, claimed Tipu's supporters had first attacked the BCL activists at the Suhrawardy Hall.

Tipu, who is a supporter of ruling party's city unit General Secretary and Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, could not be reached for comment despite several attempts.
