CERN opens research door

CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, has proposed to engage undergraduate students in its research projects.

CERN Director General Rolf-Dieter Heuer made the offer at a meeting with Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Tuesday.

Nahid told reporters that Heuer had proposed that the top talents from the undergraduate level be selected through a competitive process to work with research teams at CERN.

The minister said students would get a three-month research opportunity at the at the organisation that has won the Nobel Prize.

“An umbrella agreement will be signed with CERN in June enabling Bangladeshi researchers, teachers and students avail CERN facilities for doing research,” he said.

In December, CERN researchers would hold a three-day workshop in Bangladesh, he said.

CERN Chief Physicist Emmanuel Tsesmelis and senior education ministry officials were present at the meeting.
