This is the highest number of BTS shared by any operator in the country, GP said in a media statement on Tuesday.

After telecom regulators BTRC allowed passive telecom infrastructure sharing, GP started sharing its sites in 2009. Internet service provider Qubee was the first customer.

Since that time, the operators have shared at least 8,000 sites among themselves, GP’s Head of Infrastructure Business Mainur Rahman Bhuiyan said.

“That percentage alone is over 50 percent of the total number of BTS set up during that period.”

The BTRC recently announced that it will be issuing licences for mobile tower management and the mobile phone operators will be ineligible to apply.

But GP CEO Michael Foley said, “Mobile operators should be allowed to maintain their existing rights to build, operate, maintain and share towers and the Tower licensee can co- exist so that a competitive business environment prevails in the industry.

“It will also ensure better network quality for the customers,” he argued.
