Grameenphone earns Tk 6.6bn in net profit in the first quarter

Grameenphone’s net profit rose 17.86% year-on-year to Tk 6.6 billion in the first quarter of 2017.

The nation’s largest telecom operator has ended the first quarter with 59.9 million active subscribers, registering 3.3 percent growth from the previous quarter, the company said in a statement on Sunday.

The company also acquired 700,000 internet users during the period, taking the total number to 25.2 million.

“We passed a good quarter with healthy performance to start the year,” said Petter Furberg, CEO of Grameenphone, a unit of Norway’s Telenor.

“Our data as well voice revenue continue to grow with healthy momentum and this is an encouraging sign for us that our commitment towards providing superior network quality and simple offers are creating greater value for our valued subscribers.”

Dilip Pal, CFO of Grameenphone, said: “The result of this quarter is a testimony that securing potential growth along with operating efficiency is key in driving future profitability for the company.”

The company invested Tk4.5 billion during the quarter for 3G and 2G coverage expansion and capacity enhancement of voice.

During the quarter, the company contributed Tk11.8 billion to the state coffers, in the form of taxes, VAT, duties and license fees.
