The former BGMEA president made the announcement at a views-exchange meeting with journalists at a Dhaka hotel on Saturday.

"The election to the FBCCI Board of Directors will be held in mid-May. I will contest for the president's post," he said.

An election board headed by Professor Ali Ashraf, MP, has already been formed for the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) polls.

Former FBCCI director Shamsul Alam and former Agrani Bank director KMN Manjurul Haque are the members of the board.

Former director of the trade body Jahangir Alamin has been made the chairman of the Election Appeal Board.

The members of the Appeal Board are Mirza Abu Mansur, former president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Khairul Majid Mahmud, former president of Dhaka Club.

The election board will conduct the election to the FBCCI Board of Directors for 2017-18 and 2018-19 terms.

The last election of the FBCCI was held on May 23, 2015, which elected the current board directors headed by Abdul Matlub Ahmad.

Shafiul said the election board would announce the polls schedule very soon.

"Ramadan will start by the end of May. I hope the election will be held before that," he said.

According to the FBCCI polls rules, the president and first vice president are elected in turns from the Chamber Group and the Association Group.

In line with that rule, the president will be elected from the Association Group and the first vice-president from Chamber Group this time.

Abdul Matlub was elected from the Chamber Group and Shafiul from the Association Group in the 2015 polls.

Shafiul had worked as the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Former BGMEA president Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez and Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, an incumbent vice president of the garment entrepreneurs' body, also spoke at the meeting.
