Supplies were normal, the minister added.

He said this while replying to a question by Habiganj-1 MP Abdul Munim Chowdhury in Parliament.

Despite the high demand for certain commodities, their supplies remained normal, he said.

But the prices of some of the imported goods were influenced by their international market prices, he added.

“It is not true that the prices of commodities in the domestic market have risen abnormally. Traders have assured that the supplies and prices of essential commodities will remain favourable,” he said.

But buyers have complained of a steep rise in the prices of brinjals, green chillies, onions and gram.

“Prices were being purposely raised even before Ramadan started. On its first day, they rose many times,” said a buyer in Chittagong.

Within five days, the price of a kilogram of brinjal has risen from Tk 40 to Tk 60. Onions are up from Tk 20 to Tk 25 a kg. Cucumber has risen from Tk 20 to Tk 40 kg.

Tofail said the market of essential commodities had been stable due to the cooperation of all under the present and the previous government.

No trade deal by present government yet

No trade deal has been signed with any country during the government’s current term, he informed the House.

In reply to a question by ruling party MP Ayen Uddin, Tofail said some of the agreements have been updated.

In the import-export field, a bilateral agreement had been signed in February 2011 during the previous Awami League-led government.

He said Bangladesh had bilateral trade agreements with 45 countries, while replying to a query by Manirul Islam.

Replying to Md Abdul Matin, he said Bangladesh had duty- and quota-free trade agreements with various countries.

In the last financial year Bangladesh had earned $ 31,209 million and $ 27,630 million till April in the current financial year.
