All chain super marts to down shutters Sunday

Almost all major chain super shops in the country have decided to keep shops closed on Sunday, protesting against what they term “harassment” by police, RAB and other law enforcing agencies in the name of quality control inspection.

A Super Market Owners’ Association release signed by the Association’s General Secretary Zakir Hussain says that the super marts have taken the decision to protest against policy disparity and harassment in the name of inspections.

The release said that popular marts such as Prince Bazar, Meena Bazar, Shwapno, Carrefamily, Shop N Save and many other major outlets will keep operations suspended on Sunday.

The statement also said that despite such markets ensuring availability of quality food, police, RAB and roving courts with the media in toe, harass these outlets by conducting unscientific inspections of the food items and then imposing penalties on them.

The release also said that it seemed as if these marts sell spurious and adulterated food items. It added that these marts were being targeted.

Asked about the reason behind such a sudden decision, Shwapno executive Sabbir Hossain Nasir told bdnews24.com, “We have been requesting the government for a long time now to stop this unnecessary harassment. And since there has been no relief so far, we have decided to go for the programme.”
