Customs department initiates legal action against Chittagong company for Tk 110m tax evasion

The Customs department has started a case against a Chittagong company for allegedly dodging duties to the tune of Tk 110 million by selling at home imported raw materials meant for export.

Zakir Hossain, Deputy Director of the Customs’ detective wing, pressed charges against Liberty Enterprise with the Customs Bond Commissioner on Tuesday.

He told bdnews24.com the company had imported various types of ‘polyfilm’, including poly piling (PP) and duplex board, worth about Tk 460 million, by taking advantage of bonded warehouse facilities.

“A case has been started against it for evading revenue payment amounting to Tk 110 million by selling these commodities.” 

A day earlier, a case based on similar charges had been filed against its associate company, Sunrise Accessories.

Liberty Group owner Md Ilias Mia, who is also a director of the South Bangla Agricultural and Commerce Bank, is the Managing Director of the two companies located in Dakshin Paharhtali of Hathazari Upazilla.

Sunrise Enterprise has been accused of selling polyfilm of various categories worth Tk 30.75 million in the open market.
