Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon made the announcement on Thursday while inaugurating a tourism fair, Dhaka Travel Mart, at Hotel Sonargaon.

Bangladesh Monitor, a tourism sector periodical, organised the three-day event in cooperation with Bangladesh Tourism Board, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The minister said: “The government has made big plans for the tourism year in 2016. An initiative has been taken to make a calendar to project detailed plans.”

The government will celebrate 2016 as the tourism year as part of a mega plan to promote the prospective tourism sites.

The minister said tourism sector’s contribution to the GDP was only 2 percent though it had potential to exceed readymade garment industry’s share.

Organisers said over 50 local and international organisations, representing tourism, aviation, tour operating, hotel and resort, tourism service and financial sectors are taking part in the fair.

The fair is open from 10am to 8pm every day. The entry fee is Tk 25.
