Head of Internal Communications Syed Talat Kamal spoke of the largest mobile-phone operator’s plans on Thursday at a press conference in Barisal.

The company, also the biggest ISP in Bangladesh, currently has over 10 million internet subscribers, according to its officials.

“We have recently touched the 50-million subscriber milestone. The number of GP internet users will also reach 50 million by 2019,” Kamal hoped.

GP had been providing the best service with the strongest network from the outset, he said.

He said the operator planned to spread the use of internet by ensuring smooth 3G services.

"GP is introducing affordable smart phones with Firefox operating system to reach this goal,” Kamal added.

Barisal has half a million GP subscribers, out of whom 800,000 use the internet and some 200,000 use its 3G services, he said.

Earlier this month, former GP CEO Vivek Sood said the company was eyeing 50 million internet subscribers within the next five years.

It has introduced 3G services in 64 districts as the first mobile operator in the country under its 'internet for all' programme.

GP holds a 42 percent market share of mobile users in the country.
