Abdul Latif Siddique spoke on the issue in Parliament on Wednesday while responding to a query by Dhaka-1 MP Salma Islam.

"There is no plan yet to introduce one call rate for all operators in the country," he said.

He said BTRC in association with International Telecommunications Union (ITU) through a 'cost-modelling' project set the current call rate from minimum Tk 0.25 to maximum Tk 2 a minute.

Mobile-phone operators based their business plans on this fixed call rate, he said. "Also consumers are enjoying more freedom after 10 second pulse facility was introduced."
Minister Siqqiqui said the call rate was Tk 9.60 a minute in 2001, and it was Tk 0.83 currently.
According to BTRC data, the six operators together had over 110.6 million users in July. Over 40.9 million of them were Grameenphone subscribers..
