The central bank gave the instruction in a circular sent out to the chief executives of the banks on Thursday following a request by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

The decision is aimed at enabling the payment of wages, salaries and allowances to readymade garment industry workers and employees ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid may be celebrated on Jul 30, subject to the sighting of the moon.

The places where banks have to remain open on Jul 26 are Dhaka city, Ashulia, Tongi, Gazipur, Savar, Narayanganj and Chittagong.

Bangladesh Bank also asked the banks to ensure ‘adequate security’ of the branches that day.

The central bank has suggested paying bank officers and employees for working on a weekend holiday.

The labour ministry has ordered the payment of salaries and wages of the RMG sector employees and workers by Jul 26 at a meeting with BGMEA, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and worker leaders on Tuesday.
