Netherlands will coordinate donors’ projects in Bangladesh to improve working conditions in the factories.

Deputy Head of Mission Dutch embassy in Dhaka Carel Richter on Saturday said his country’s minister for trade and development on Friday had pledged to invest 9 million Euro soon after assuming the Chair of the donors’ committee.

Speaking at a meet-the-press, where representatives from foreign and joint business chambers expressed their concern over the recent political violence in Bangladesh, Richter said the minister made the pledge after the last month’s Savar building collapse where more than 1,100 people mostly garment workers died.

He said the European Union gave the charge to his country. Richter said they would try to see how quickly they could improve the working conditions and added that Bangladesh was one of the priority countries for development support.

The bilateral trade volume between Bangladesh and Netherlands was growing.

In 2012 Netherlands invested about 200 million Euro in Bangladesh that had created nearly 30,000 jobs.

The building collapse and last November’s factory fire have galvanised development partners and global brand buyers into action.
