Nearly 700 tonnes of relief materials were being loaded in INS Gharial, a naval vessel, at the Kakinada deepwater port in Andhra Pradesh for transportation to Chittagong in Bangladesh.

The relief material comprises of rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, ready to eat noodles, tea, biscuits, and mosquito nets, among others and is expected to take care of approximately 68,000 families, according to Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

The ship is expected to reach Dhaka on Sep 29 when it will be handed over to the government of Bangladesh to tackle the huge influx of refugees.

India earlier said it would provide relief to 300,000 of the 400,000 newly arrived Rohingyas to Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

So far, 100 tonnes of relief materials have been reached Chittagong in two consignments from India.
