The meeting took place at the world body's headquarters on Monday morning local time ahead of the general debate of the UN General Assembly that is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday.

Trump criticised the UN for bloated bureaucracy and mismanagement at the meeting.

"In recent years, the United Nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement," he said.

This is the first UNGA after both Trump and Secretary General Antonio Guterres took charge.

Prime Minister Hasina was scheduled to take part in two other meetings at the UN headquarters on Monday afternoon - one on Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse while the other is a follow-up meeting of Global Deal for Decent Work and Inclusive Growth.

She will also hold bilateral meetings with her Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

Hasina is among representatives from 193 countries that have taken part in the assembly.

She is scheduled to address the assembly on Thursday, with focus on the ongoing Rohingya exodus from Myanmar into Bangladesh.
