Miah was ordered to jail by the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal on Tuesday.

Two cases were filed over the 2000 incident: one under the explosives material act and the other under the special powers act.

Seventy-six kilograms of explosives were discovered on the scene of a planned Sheikh Hasina rally at the Sheikh Lutfur Rahman College ground in Kotalipara, the electoral constituency of the Awami League chief.

Though he was acquitted in the explosives case on Aug 20, Miah received 14 years in prison and a Tk 10,000 fine in the special powers case.

Miah’s lawyers Faruk Ahmed and Sheikh Lutfar Rahman told bdnews24.com that he was out on bail granted by the High Court and had even testified under section 164, but had fled afterwards.

Ten people were sentenced to death over the assassination attempt. Ten others were acquitted. One was sentenced to life in prison. Two others received the same sentence as Miah.

“I was made a suspect in the case because I am related to Mufti Hannan,” former primary school teacher Miah told bdnews24.com on Tuesday. “I heard the verdict over the television and have turned myself in out of my respect for the law.”
