The fire service has been searching for the unidentified boy reported missing on Tuesday afternoon.
"The boy aged 17 or 18 had climbed down a manhole at Nilgoti Road of Chalantika intersection," Mirpur Fire Station officer Abdullah Arefin told bdnews24.com.
He was given the task of cleaning the manhole by workers of a garment manufacturing factory, he said.
"Witnesses here said the boy removed some waste inside the sewer causing the water flow to rapidly increase. The boy was sucked in by that flow."
"We will continue to search for some time today. But if we can't find him tonight, we will ask the city corporation to use their excavators to find him. Waste is clogging the sewer line, we can barely work here."
