Those arrested are Sakhwat Hossain, Zabin Khan and Abdul Khaleque.

Twelve gold bars, 10 weighting 100 grams each and two weighing one kilogram each—were found inside Sakhawat’s baggage, said Customs Assistant Commissioner Md Saiful Islam.

Sakhawat, 39, arrived in Dhaka from Malaysia via Bangkok around 12:30pm Thursday. He took a Thai Airways flight, according to Islam.

The market value of the gold bars is estimated at around Tk 50 million, Islam told bdnews24.com.

Earlier in the day, a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carried Zabin and Khaleque to Dhaka from Malaysia.

They were searched at the green channel because of their suspicious behaviour and four gold bars—each weighing 100 gram—were found inside Zabin’s shoes, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has said in a Facebook post.

Another four gold bars were found inside Khaleque’s handbag, according to the post.

The eight bars are worth around Tk 3 million, it said.
