Man who shot police dies in Dhaka ‘shootout’

A suspect in a police shooting case has been killed in a ‘shootout’ with law enforcers in Old Dhaka.

The incident occurred near Jurain graveyard on Monday night, said Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (West) Deputy Commissioner Md Sajjadur Rahman.

The dead has been identified as Md Mamun. Police say they recovered a pistol from the scene of the shootout.

Metropolitan Detective Police Western Division Senior Assistant Commissioner Rahul Patwari was ‘shot by criminals’ during an anticrime raid on Aug 12.

College student Billol Hossain Mridul, a passerby, and Md Selim Miah were also wounded in the gunfire.

The prime suspect in the shooting, Shantanu, was arrested with a firearm in the Jatrabari area around 8pm on Monday, said Rahman. Shantanu led a police team to the graveyard area on a raid to capture his accomplices later that night.

“The criminals opened fire and police retaliated. Afterwards we found one of the perpetrators lying wounded. He was taken to hospital and declared dead by doctors.”

Shyampur Police Station SI Mahbub Alam brought a man with a gunshot wound to the hospital around 4am on Tuesday, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost SI Md Bachchu Miah.

Mamun was also a suspect in the shooting case.
