These applicants are citizens who will turn 18 by Jan 1, 2018 and thus become eligible to cast vote in the next general elections.

The EC carried out a campaign from Jul 25 to Aug 9 to sign up new voters and update information about the existing ones.

The EC has dropped 1.33m people following their death and received 60,873 requests for updating postal address during the campaign, Helaluddin Ahmed, acting secretary of the commission, told bdnews24.com on Thursday.

Those who were enlisted as 15-year-olds in 2015 will automatically be included in the latest list of voters, he said.

The EC aims to enlist 3.5 million new voters in its recent campaign, he added.
