The OIC secretary general is leading a five-member delegation.

This his first visit to Bangladesh since assuming office of the Secretary General of OIC, the foreign ministry said.

Kamrul Ahsan, Secretary (Bi-lateral and Consular) of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received him at the airport on Wednesday night.

During the visit, the Secretary General Othaimeen is expected to call on the president, prime minister and the foreign minister.

The visit gives the secretary general an opportunity to familiarise himself with Bangladesh, a country playing an increasingly important role in OIC.

It would also give him the opportunity to seek views and suggestions of Bangladesh leadership on various OIC issues and matters of importance to the Muslim Ummah and the Islamic world.

As Bangladesh is going to host the 45th OIC Council of Foreign Ministers next year, this visit will initiate discussion on coordination between Bangladesh and OIC Secretarial for that meeting.
