Gautam Kumar Nandi’s remains were retrieved from the estuary of Betchharha canal at Tarachha Union in Roangchharhi Upazila on Thursday afternoon.

That place is several kilometres from the scene at Dalianparha on the Bandarban-Ruma Road where the landslides struck on Jul 23, killing a woman on the spot.

The springs on the hills, through which the road goes, may have taken the body to Betchhara canal estuary after the landslides.

Nandi, a second officer in Krishi Bank’s Ruma branch, is the second among the four missing to have been found dead. The first was Upazila health worker Munni Barua, 30.

The two others who are yet to be traced are the Upazila’s postmaster Rabiul Alam, 50, and one Mesing Marma, 15.

Tarachha Union Chairman Uthwaiching Marma said locals had informed the police after seeing Nandi’s body under the mud at Betchhara canal estuary.

Later, the police recovered it and took it to Bandarban district town.

Roangchharhi police OC Omar Ali said Nandi’s son Arjita Nandi identified his father’s remains.

Nandi’s body was handed over to his son later on Thursday night, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the district Didar-e-Alam Md Maqsud Chowdhury told reporters.

Bandarban Fire Service Station’s Assistant Director Iqbal Hossian said a search for the two missing others is still on-going under the supervision of the army.
