A team of detectives detained the suspects during an operation in Uttara and other parts of the capital on Wednesday night, Md Yusuf Ali, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told bdnews24.com.

Details about the detainees and the specific charges against them were not revealed by police. Police would release more information at a press conference on Thursday, Ali said.

Nigerian nationals had previously been arrested in Bangladesh for drug dealing, mobile phone and internet fraud and various other crimes.

Four Nigerian nationals were arrested in Dhaka in November last year for setting up a fraudulent mobile phone lottery.

Two other Nigerians were among five detained in October for defrauding a woman of Tk 2.1 million, claiming the money would be used to set up a UN doctor’s clinic in Bangladesh.

Previously, police claimed to have detained a Nigerian fraud ring of 15-20 individuals.

Detective police say many Nigerians come to Bangladesh on an on-arrival visa, stay past the expiry date and become involved in criminal activities.
