The gunfight took place in the Beribadh area on Wednesday morning, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Branch Golam Mostafa Rasel told bdnews24.com.

“A team of detective police raided the area, based on a tip-off that the muggers were located there,” he said.

“The muggers caught sight of the team and opened fire. Police returned fire and two of the suspects were injured in the shootout. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead,” Golam Mostafa added.

Asked about the identity of the deceased, the police officer said, "They were identified as Zakir and Farooq who were suspected in the murder of ASP Mizan.”

According to police, four suspects had dragged ASP Mizanur inside a car for a mugging but strangled him and dumped his body once they discovered his identity.

Rahman’s body was found with a cloth wrapped around his throat near the Birulia Bridge in Rupnagar on Jun 21.

He had left his Uttara home for work around 5am that day in plainclothes. His home is about 20 minutes away by car from the spot where he was found dead.

The body bore bruises on neck and other parts, Dhaka Medical College Hospital said in an autopsy report.

Rahman was posted in Savar circle of the highway police under Gazipur zone.

His younger brother Masum Talukdar started a murder case against several unnamed people with Rupnagar police.

A suspect in the case, Shah Alam, had been arrested over the murder on Jun 23.
