His remarks came at a time on Wednesday when the capital city of Bangladesh was in shambles with rainwater flooding roads, worsening traffic jams.
Commuters waded through knee or waist-deep water throughout the day. Small accidents were reported on the roads undergoing construction.
While addressing journalists in front of the secretariat, Mosharraf said 18 out of the 46 canals in the city required repair works.
“I have asked WASA (Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority) to ensure that rainwater recedes within three hours no matter how intensely it showers,” he said.
“Today’s situation is unusual. I promise that such situation will not occur next year.”
The secretariat premises also got flooded where the minister had his meeting with the district commissioners on Wednesday.
The two city mayors, on the other hand, have refused to take any responsibility of the situation.
“WASA is supposed to fix the waterlogging problem. Our workers are in action but they (WASA) are hardly found,” said Dhaka South City Mayor Sayeed Khokon.
On Wednesday, 57mm of rain was recorded by the Met office between 6am and 12pm.
