Langadu Upazila executive officer or UNO Mosaddek Mehedi Imam told bdnews24.com on Wednesday that the government would build the houses under Ashrayan-2, a rehabilitation project of the Prime Minister’s Office.

He said he received a letter in this regard from the PMO on July 24.

Referring to the letter signed by Ashrayan-2 Director Joint Secretary Abul Kalam Shamsuddin, he said 212 families would get a tin-roofed house with three rooms, a kitchen and a toilet under the project.

Owners of eight shops burnt down in the violence will get cash under the same project to rebuild their shops.

The UNO said the project director asked the local administration to send plan and an estimated cost to build the houses.

“We are working on the plan and the estimated cost of the homes. We’ll send those soon,” he said.

The body of Nurul Islam Nayan, a local leader of the ruling Awami League’s youth front Juba League, was found near a local highway in Khagrachhari's Dighinala Upazila on June 1. He used to transport passengers on his motorbike.

The following day, a protest march over his death in Rangamati's Langadu turned violent, leading to attacks on several hundred homes of the local ethnic minority community.

Bangalees blamed the murder on the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity or PCJSS, which has rejected the allegations.

Most of the families that lost their homes in the mayhem are staying in two local schools and a hostel. Some others have built makeshift houses on their land.

Police arrested 26 people, including local BNP leaders, over the violence.

Two tribal people were also arrested over the murder of Nayan. Police said the duo killed Nayan while hijacking his motorcycle.
