Deputy Director of the department of Agriculture Extension Md Aftab Uddin told bdnews24.com that they have recorded around 300 millimetres of rainfall in the last week.
“Almost 1500 hectares of seedbeds including betel-leaves and Aman rice have been submerged by water,” he said.
There is a high risk of losing the seedbeds of Aman rice and betel—leaf if the heavy rain continues, he said.
District Fisheries Officer Zia Haider is concerned about the severe damage the rains could do to the lives of farmers and fishermen.
Many of the fish farmers are attempting to trap the fish by repairing dams and throwing nets over them.
The homes of hundreds of people were waterlogged at different areas of the Sadar Upazila’s. Many of the local dams have overflowed. The water has accumulated in front of many houses, submerging stoves and making it difficult to cook.
Karapara Uniron Parishad Officer Jahidur Rahman told bdnews24.com that hundreds of people in his area have been waterlogged.
He demanded the renovation of local canals.
“We are suffering due to lack of drainage system,” he said. “A few days of rain can cause waterlogging and submerge betel-leaf seed beds and fish enclosure. We are facing a great financial crisis.”
