Bangladesh seaports on alert as rough weather persists 

Heavy rains will continue for two more days under the influence of a low in the Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Department forecasts.

Due to rough sea, seaports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal No. 3.

Meteorologists also fear more landslides in the hill areas of Chittagong and Sylhet due to continuous rain.

Moderate to heavy rains have been continuing since Sunday. As much as 28mm rainfall has been recorded in Dhaka in the 24 hours to 6pmMonday.

Meteorologist Omar Faruque said monsoon winds may bring about heavy rains (44-88mm) to extreme heavy rains (89mm or above) in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet.

“The moderate to heavy rain will continue for two more days. There is a danger of landslides in Chittagong and Sylhet hill tracts due to heavy rains,” Faruque added.

The Meteorological Department says that there has been a well-marked low in West Bengal and adjoining areas, which stretches from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, from the middle area of Bangladesh to North-east Assam.

The weather forecast said light to moderate rains and thunderstorms coupled with squally winds in most places of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department issued local cautionary signal No. 3 for Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep-sea have been advised to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
