A High Court bench, taking cognisance of a writ petition, issued the order on Sunday for 'not choosing and calling' registered graduates to the meeting scheduled for July 29.
Fifteen registered graduates filed a writ petition asking for the stay order on the notice dated Jul 16, by which the senate meeting was called.
The High Court issued a rule asking the authorities why the meeting should not be declared ultra vires, or beyond the authority of the senate. It also asked why the notice should not be declared illegal.
The vice-chancellor, pro-VC (education), pro-VC (administration), registrar and the education secretary have been made respondents to the rule.
Dhaka University Senate members elect a panel of three candidates for the post of vice-chancellor and the president, who is also the chancellor of Bangladesh's universities, confirms one of them as VC of the University.
According to the writ petition, the senate meeting for choosing the VC candidates has to have 25 registered graduates as well as representatives of teachers and students. According to the Dhaka University Order, 1973, the Senate has to have at least 99 members.
But, the senate called the meeting without nominating all the registered graduates as per the rules. The petitioners claimed that all the senate posts for registered graduates are not filled up.
The High Court also ordered Dhaka University to form its senate in line with the University rules.
