The dead are Amirul Islam, the UP chairman of Tarash Upazila’s Naogaon Union and vice-president of the Upazila’s BNP branch, 40-year old Mrinal Chandra Roy and an unidentified third victim.

A bus travelling from Kurigram to Dhaka through Sirajganj’s Kazipur was involved in the accident, according to Kazipur Fire Service Station Officer Liakat Ali.

“The bus veered out of control in the Shonamukhi area and struck a tree, instantly killing Mrinal and another passenger. The police and fire service recovered the victims from the scene.”

Another 10 were injured in the accident and have been taken to local hospitals, he said.

Chairman Amirul was declared dead by Sirajganj Sadar Hospital’s Dr Rokonuzzaman.

Amirul was riding a motorcycle in the Sadar Upazila’s Shiolkol Union on Saturday morning when it was struck by a bus, the doctor said.

“He suffered injuries to the head and several other parts of the body. He passed away around 12:30pm while undergoing treatment.”

Police have taken custody of the bus but were unable to arrest the driver.
