In the face of criticism, both South and North City Corporations announced chikungunya as the cause of ‘public sufferings’ and dedicated their resources to the fight against mosquitoes.

The decision to cancel weekly holidays came on Monday, just two days after Mayor Mohammad Sayed Khokan inaugurated a special ‘mosquito eradication drive’ in the south in which the mayor ordered to invest optimum manpower and resources.

The 'special drive' is now covering the Dhanmondi area of the capital.

Moreover, the DNCC has opened 28 health centres in three hospitals to provide health advice and medicine to chikungunya sufferers.
