Cricketer Arafat Sunny gets bail in dowry case

Cricketer Arafat Sunny has turned himself in to the Dhaka court a day after a warrant was issued against him in a dowry case.

Sunny, who was said to be suffering from chikungunya, received bail.

Sunny limped to the court around 11:30am on Monday. His lawyer Muraduzzaman presented documentation of his treatment for the bail petition.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain Tipu granted the petition, Muraduzzaman said.

“He (Arafat Sunny) truly is afflicted with chikungunya. He has come to court after hearing of the arrest warrant.”

Sunny did not speak during the hearing.

The court had indicted Sunny on a case filed by Sunny’s second wife Nasrin Sultana on Sunday.

The case accuses him of assaulting Sultana for dowry.

The case was started in January of this year.

Five months later it was transferred to the court of Magistrate Zakir.

Sunny, the spinner of the national cricket team, married Nasrin in 2014 without his family’s consent and started living with her at a rented house. He then pestered Nasrin for Tk 2 million as dowry, as per the case dossier.

Sunny was arrested in January after Nasrin sued him in a case under the Information and Communication Technology or ICT Act.

Later, the plaintiff went on to file two more cases under the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Sunny was arrested in the ICT case and later released under Nasrin’s custody.

The 30-year-old has revealed that he has two wives; Nasrin is the second.

He has so far failed to convince Nasrin to live with him and his first wife, said Sunny’s lawyer.
