On Dec 9, 2012, Biswajit, who was tailor, was hacked to death by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League or BCL near the Bahadur Shah Park during a strike called by the BNP-led 18-Party alliance.

The murder had put the ruling Awami League in a tight spot as all those accused belonged to the party’s student affiliate, BCL.

In December 2013, a Dhaka court convicted 21 persons, all of them Chhatra League activists, in the killing.

Eight persons were awarded the death penalty while 13 others got life imprisonment.
