Sarker and Ganajagaran Mancha activist Sanatan Ullash had turned themselves in to the court on Sunday on defamation charges and secured bail.

A group of men attacked Sarker’s car as he was leaving the court, pelting it with rotten eggs. The attackers chanted pro-Awami League slogans.

The plaintiff in the case, Golam Rabbani, a leader of the party's student front, was among the attackers, say witnesses.

“Chhatra League thugs attacked us on the court premises. If such attacks can occur at the court, how can everyone respect the judiciary?” Sarker said in a Facebook post after the incident.

Bangladesh Chhatra League is the student affiliate of the ruling Awami League.

The allegations against Sarker and Ullash stem from slogans chanted against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a protest against the removal of the Lady Justice statue from the Supreme Court premises on May 25.
