“Bangladesh will not hesitate to provide whatever possible assistance or help to Sri Lanka as we have an extremely cordial relationship,” Ali told Lankan President during a courtesy call.

According to a statement from the Lankan president’s office, Ali also said: "There is nothing that Bangladesh cannot do for Sri Lanka."

Ali paid a courtesy call on Sirisena Friday night at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. The Lankan president left Dhaka on Saturday ending his three-day maiden state visit to Bangladesh.

The foreign minister further said President Sirisena’s visit to Bangladesh was an “important milestone in the long-standing friendship between the two countries”.

The president expressed gratitude to the government of Bangladesh for the warm welcome extended to the Sri Lankan delegation led by him.

Sirisena also said Bangladesh is always a “true friend” to Sri Lanka, and with gratitude, recalled the assistance given by the government of Bangladesh in the recent floods as well as during the conflict in the past.

Bangladesh contributed $500,000 cash assistance as the humanitarian aid towards the flood affected people of Sri Lanka, even at a time when Bangladesh was affected by Cyclone ‘Mora’.

The president deeply appreciated the gesture during his meeting with the prime minister.

He also expressed condolences at the loss of lives, livelihood and property during the recent landslides in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Sirisena told Ali that he was not a guest to Bangladesh, and recalled his memories of the earlier visit as the minister of environment and the minister of health.

He appreciated the progress made by Bangladesh under the leadership of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and emphasised the need to take steps further to promote the investment opportunities and trade relations between the two countries.
