The right-arm medium fast bowler from Narayanganj married Farzana, who uses only one name, of Munshiganj's Dalalparha nearly eight years ago, her cousin Dalu Kazi told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.

The couple has a son and a daughter.

Dalu alleged Shahid 'regularly tortured' Farzana since the marriage.

"Their daughter was born last year. But Shahid did not accept the daughter and started to torture my sister with more regularity," he said.

"He threatened to push her off the roof after beating her in his Narayanganj home a week ago. So, Farzana left Shahid's home and came to her father's," he added.

Dalu said Farzana went to Hatimara Police Camp in Munshiganj with her father on Monday.

"We will start a case in a court in Narayanganj, where the incidents took place, after the Eid holidays following their (police's) advice," he said.

Sub-Inspector Hafizur Rahman at Hatimara Police Camp admitted that they had advised Shahid's wife to initiate the case in Narayanganj.

Both the Munshiganj correspondent and sports correspondent of bdnews24.com tried to reach Shahid on the phone for comment but failed.

Shahid played five Tests and one T20 International for Bangladesh. He has five Test wickets and one T20I wicket to his name.

He has been sidelined after getting injured during Bangladesh Premier League in November last year. He played for Dhaka Dynamites in the tournament.
