Youth ‘run over, killed by muggers’ car’ in Dhaka, another injured

A young man has been killed and another one injured after being ‘run over by the vehicle of a group of muggers’ in front of Matsya Bhaban in Dhaka’s Shahbagh, police say.

They identified the deceased as Md Sajib, 20, and the injured as his uncle Hazrat Ali. Both are poultry traders and hailed from Mymensingh.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost’s Sub-Inspector Md Bachchu Mia said doctors declared Sajib dead after several pedestrians brought the two in around 1am on Wednesday.

Quoting Ali, he said they were going on rickshaw van to Kaptan Bazar from Farmgate to buy chickens. “But a microbus hit the van from behind in front of Matsya Bhaban and both fell on the street. Then several youths came out of the microbus and forcibly took Tk 8,000 away from Sajib.”

According to Ali, Mia said, the muggers’ vehicle ran over Sajib when they were fleeing . Ali was hit by the microbus too.

The police official said Sajib’s body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy while Ali is being treated.
