Film actor Tanvir Tonu arrested on rape charges

Police have arrested film actor and model Tanvir Rahman Tonu on charges of raping a woman.

Rupnagar Police Station OC Shahidul Alam told bdnews24.com that Tonu was detained at his house in Rupnagar Residential Area on Friday afternoon after the victim had complained to police.

The victim, an executive at a private firm, later started a case against the actor.

She said in the case that Tonu called her to his house at Rupnagar in Mirpur on May 6 and raped her. One of Tonu's friends was present at the house at the time, she claimed.

OC Shahidul said the woman told the police that Tonu went into hiding after the alleged assault. She said she informed the police when she was certain that Tonu was at home.

Tonu's wife was also at home when the police detained him. The couple have no child.

Referring to the case dossier, the OC said Tonu became close to the woman after being introduced on Facebook. He wanted to take him to Malaysia.

"He called the woman on May 6 to speak about the trip. His wife was not at home. Tonu raped the woman and asked his friend to rape her. She fled later," the OC said citing the case files.

Tonu appeared in a number of movies including 'Full and Final', 'Gunda', and 'Khas Zamin'.  

He also played the role of Satish in 'Karmaphal' based on the short story by Rabindranath Tagore.
