“I believe that the people of Bangladesh are enjoying the fruits of development and will vote for the Awami League again to ensure its continuation,” Hasina said at an event at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Leaders and activists of Awami League met their party chief Hasina on Sunday. On this day in 2008, Hasina was released from jail after 11 months behind bars, during the military-installed caretaker regime. The Awami League has celebrated the anniversary of her release in the years since.

The Awami League formed a government in 2008, returning to power on a landslide victory.

The Awami League then began a second consecutive term after the tenth national parliamentary elections in 2014, which were boycotted by the BNP.

Awami League leaders greeted the prime minister with flowers. She also received flowers from parties allied with the Awami League.

“Bangladesh will become a middle-income country by 2021 if the continuity of the Awami League government is maintained,” Hasina said at the event. “And Bangladesh will become a developed country by 2041.”

“I believe that every person is experiencing the benefits of development under the Awami League government and it has been proven that it is essential for the country to maintain this continuity.”

Hasina also encouraged the party’s activists to emulate the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in pursuing politics.

“Honesty, devotion, concentration and the willingness to sacrifice are the most vital qualities in political life.”
