Dhaka’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after they were produced before the court on Sunday, Ashulia police OC Mohsinul Quadir told bdnews24.com.

Lawyer Sanaul Islam Tipu, who stood for three female students among the accused, said his clients were also charged for attempted murder.

The university authorities have filed a case against them for ‘assaulting teachers and creating chaos’ on the campus.

The students were detained following their ‘violent protests’ against the deaths of two fellow students in a road accident near their campus in Savar.

A bus ran over marketing student Nazmul Hasan Rana and microbiology student ‘Arafat’ in the C&B area on early Friday.

Students got enraged by the university authorities' decision to send the bodies to the families without funeral prayers on the campus.

They blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway for an hour on Friday and resumed demonstrations around 12pm on Saturday.

Around 5pm, police fired the teargas shells and charged batons to clear the highway. Seven students suffered injuries during the incident and received treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, JU Chhatra League President Jewel Rana and General Secretary Abu Sifian assaulted some students on the campus, said witnesses.

They later barged into the campus residence of Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam and carried out vandalism.

After an emergency meeting at night, the JU syndicate asked students to vacate dormitories and ordered the university shut indefinitely.

Police caught 42, including 10 female students, from the VC’s house on the campus of JU.

Students were seen leaving the 15 residential halls on early Sunday.

Additional police have been deployed on the campus to quell troubles.
