The Meteorological Department, in a special weather bulletin on Sunday evening, asked the maritime ports to hoist distant cautionary signal No. 1.

The deep depression over East-Central Bay and adjoining area moved slightly northwards over the same area and was centred at about 735 kilometres South-Southwest of Chittagong port, according to the bulletin.

Meteorologist Abdur Rahman Khan said the depression might intensify into a cyclone by midnight and move towards a northerly direction further, which means towards the coast.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 48km of the deep depression centre is likely to be about 50kph rising to 60kph in gusts or squalls. The sea will remain very rough near the system.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been asked to take shelter immediately and stay in the shelter until further notice.

The last cyclone over the Bay occurred on Apr 16.

After Bangladesh experienced rainfall at the double than the usual rate in April, meteorologists warned of topsy-turvy weather in May.

They said heatwaves, thunderstorms, and flash floods might occur in the month.
