Police's counterterrorism unit surrounded a five-storey building at the town's Genda around 7:30pm on Friday and raided a flat, but it emerged that the terror suspects had left it in the morning.

Two hours later, security forces raided a six-storey building in the same neighbourhood.

Counterterrorism Deputy Commissioner Mahibul Islam told bdnews24.com on Friday that they have spotted some explosives inside a flat on the second building.

On Saturday morning, the bomb disposal unit was called in to search the flat for explosives.

Bomb squad personnel were seen entering the building around 10:45am.

Around 12pm, a loud explosion was heard from the spot followed by at least eight more.

Local MP Enamur Rahman told the media near the building that he suspected there were bombs and terror suspects in the building.

"I have held a rally in this area 15 days ago. I suspect activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir might be involved," said the ruling party MP.
