“Suspect Nayem Ashraf admitted that he and other suspects committed the crimes,” Anisur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told bdnews24.com on Thursday.

After a seven-day remand, Victim Support Centre Inspector Ismat Ara Emi filed a petition to record Nayem’s statement.

Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Shikder later recorded Nayem's statement.

Inspector Emi is investigating the case over the rape of two university students at the Raintree hotel in the capital's Banani.

Nayem and Shafat Ahmed are accused of raping the two students in the case. Shafat is the son of Dildar Ahmed, one of the owners of Apan Jewellers.

Shafat's friend Shadman Sakif, the son of Regnum Group co-owner Mohammad Hossain Jony, and Shafat's driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali are charged with abetting the alleged rape incident and filming it.

All five are behind bars now and gave confessional statements under Section 164 of the CrPC that allows magistrates to record confessions of any person which can be used as evidence in trial.

Nayem Ashraf, known as Hasan Mohammad Halim in Sirajganj, was arrested in Munshiganj's Louhajang on May 17.

DMP DC Anisur Rahman said Nayem was sent to jail after his statement was recorded on Thursday.
