Chittagong City Corporation, with logistics and financial support from social welfare outfit Tilottoma Chottogram, plans to start the project on May 25.
“Initially, rooftop gardens will be designed in 100 schools and 50 buildings. Those interested to plant trees on the road islands may step forward,” said Chittagong City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin on Tuesday.
Ten people will receive a ‘Green Award’ every six months for their contribution to the programme.
Citing hazardous impact of urbanisation and increasing population on nature, the mayor said: “This is an attempt to return to nature.”
The building owners will be trained, said campaign director Ali Murtoza.
“Our vigilance team will give advice and trainings to the building owners once a week. They can also contact us online,” he said.
Eventually, all houses, hospitals and educational institutions in Chittagong will be brought under the programme, said Murtoza.
