Customs detectives had ordered Apan Jewellers to return the gold, gold ornaments and other jewellery to customers at 2pm on Monday when the designated officials from the department could open the sealed vaults, CIID chief Moinul Khan said.

Owners Dildar Ahmed and his brothers Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed said in a hearing on May 17 that the amount of such gold could be from 2kg to 10kg.

Khan said on Monday the owners had been asked to submit the necessary documents relating to the deposited gold and ornaments to the customs on May 18, but they did not do so.

They have been asked again to submit the documents on Thursday, he said.

Ornaments will be returned to the customers as per the list and documents from Apan Jewellers.

The CIID detectives raided and sealed off five Apan Jewellers shops last week following allegations of gold smuggling and money laundering against Dildar.

The allegations surfaced after Dildar’s son Shafat Ahmed was accused of raping two university students in a Dhaka hotel. Shafat is behind bars while the police are investigating the case.

The CIID also ‘seized’ the gold ornaments but kept them in those shops they sealed off.
