Yunus Farazi, the sacked imam, conducted the special prayers at a mosque on Saturday also to save Apan Jewellers, one of whose owners is the father of Shafat Ahmed, the prime suspect in the rape case.

Abdul Hannan, general secretary of the committee that runs the Badr Mokam Jame Masjid in the resort town, told bdnews24.com on Sunday that Yunus was sacked on Saturday night after conducting the prayers following the Asr prayers.

Hannan said, "Yunus Farazi did not inform the committee before conducting the special prayers for release of the people accused of a condemnable misdeed like rape and save Apan Jewellers.

“We called him to an emergency meeting but there he could not clarify the reason behind his actions. That's why we've sacked him."

On Friday, Ridwanul Haque, the imam of another mosque some 2.5 kilometres from the Badr Mokam Jame Masjid, fled when locals were enraged over his attempt to conduct special prayers for the rape accused.
