Safat’s driver, bodyguard arrested over Dhaka hotel rape

Two more suspects of a rape case started by two university students have been arrested in Dhaka.

Driver ‘Billal’, who allegedly helped employer Safat Ahmed rape the girls in a Banani hotel, was caught at a hotel in Dhaka’s Nawabpur on Monday, said RAB-10 chief Jahangir Alam Matubbar.

Rahmat Ali, the bodyguard who is accused of aiding the rape of girls at gunpoint, was arrested in Gulshan around 7pm.

He was armed at the time of his arrest, said Krishnapada Roy, Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Theirs are the third and the fourth arrests made in the high-profile case that accuses five.

Safat, son of an owner of Apan Jewellers, was arrested last week in Sylhet.

A prime accused, he was caught along with Shadman Sakif, a friend he had in common with the victims, who is said to have aided the crime.

The university students said Safat had invited them to his birthday at Banani’s The Raintree on Mar 28.

He then raped the girls along with friend Nayem Ashraf and had his aides film their assault, according to the case details.
